Before it reaches the stores
The trucking business has improved and supported other industries ever since it started in the early 1900’s. Trucking business had played a large part in it transporting crude oil, delivering goods and moving homes.
Usually trucks are used to complement sea transport for overseas delivery. Most large amounts of cargo are transported by train on land or by ship on sea. But if the manufacturer is not located near a railroad or a wharf, trucks are needed for the final leg of transport.
First, as the cargo is unloaded from the ship, the trucking company determines what sort of cargo they are going to carry. Is it produce that needs refrigeration? Is it toxic or dangerous in any way? Is it live animals that need semi-trailers with ventilation? Do we need any security? These questions need to be answered before moving on to the loading of cargo into the truck.
Once the nature of the cargo is determined, it will be loaded onto the truck. From this point on, the trucker will be responsible for any losses to the cargo. The trucker will be told of any special handling that is needed by the cargo, such as a temperature control or whether the trucker should avoid bumps that may damage the cargo. If the cargo is toxic, the trucker will be told of safety precautions and procedures to be followed if anything happens.
Other factors also need to be considered by the trucking company before transporting the cargo. The destination is particular issue that needs to be thought about. Since the implementation of the ‘hours of service’ regulation, trucking companies need to mix and match truckers with the destination in question. This is important to avoid any cases of fatigue in truckers that may lead to accidents.
Now, the destination is fixed, the truckers need to find the best and fastest way to get there. Should he take the highway and lose a few dollars to tolls? Should he brave the back roads and risk damaging the cargo? Will he pass through any urban areas and get stuck in traffic jams and delay delivery?
In some countries, these problems have found a couple of solution. Special highways are constructed in countries such as Australia that is exclusive to ‘road trains’ or massive leviathans which appear to be bastard children of trains and trucks. These road trains have the entire highway to themselves which reduces loss of lives or property if an accident occurs.
Once the journey is underway, the trucker will be given a number of stops and a limited time per stop. These are important to ensure the trucker’s rest, the truck’s maintenance and the condition of the cargo. These stops happen at different places along the highway. A congregation of trucks will often be seen where truckers are allowed to fraternize.
Once they reached the destination safely, the cargo is checked for any damages or loss. A quick check is made to make sure the records tally with the records from the harbor. So, the next time you buy groceries, know that the items you’re buying has traveled hundred of miles in a truck before reaching the cargo bay of your local stores.
